This government office is the engine that runs Motor City. The City of Detroit is governed by a mayor and an elected nine-member council -- one of the few in the US that serve as a full-time legislative body. Together, they are charged with the administration of city government, comprising some 70 different departments and agencies, including budget, police, water and sewage, the Detroit Film Office, and workforce development. The city's metropolitan area (Metro Detroit) covers some 3,900 square miles with about 4,425,000 residents.
